TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Surabaya City government has imposed a temporary ban against a number of general night time businesses amidst Islamic holy month of Ramadan under a circular meant to maintain public order. This will temporarily restrict operational hours of night bars, pubs, adult karaoke establishments, spa and massage services.
Moreover, Surabaya City mayor Eri Cahyadi on Sunday also announced that “movie theaters are banned from showing movies from 17:30 in the afternoon up to 20:00 o’clock,” Antaranews reported.
The time period Cahyadi mentioned coincides with the time Muslims break their fast and night-time Tarawih prayers. Surabaya City residents are also barred from selling or serving alcoholic beverages throughout Ramadan and the Eid al-Fitr day.
Restaurants and other businesses that sell food are permitted to operate during the day but are strongly suggested not to attract attention when opening business.
The use of fireworks are also banned during the Ramadan month. “Every Surabaya residents are expected to maintain the situation and public order during Ramadan and Eid,” he added.
