TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The latest report by IQAir, a firm that tracks global air quality, found that Jakarta ranked 12th among the most polluted cities in the world.
The Swiss company recorded in its 2021 report that the highest average concentrations of Particulate Matter or PM 2.5 in Indonesia’s capital reached 39.2 µg/m3, slightly dropped from the previous year’s 39.6 µg/m3.
It is the first major report based on the updated WHO’s air quality guidelines released in September 2021 that annual average concentrations of PM2.5 should not exceed 5 µg/m3.
According to the report, the air pollution level in Jakarta is higher than the capital cities of neighboring countries such as Malaysia’s Kuala Lumpur (18.6 g/m3) at 49th position, Philippines’ Metro Manila (15.7 g/m3) at 57th position, and Singapore (13.8 g/m3) at 66th position.
New Delhi of India (85.0 g/m3) was the top city with the worst air pollution in the world, followed by Dhaka of Bangladesh (78.1 g/m3) and N'Djaemena of Chad (77.6 g/m3).
Meanwhile, Indonesia ranked 17th among the most polluted countries in the world with the highest average concentration of PM2.5 at 34.3 g/m3. This also made Indonesia the number country with the worst air pollution in Southeast Asia.
