TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia in 2021 recorded 5,057,516 units of motorcycles sold, the Indonesian Motorcycle Industry Association (AISI) said. This is a 38 percent increase from 2020's 3,660,616 units.
AISI head of Commercial Affairs, Sigit Kumala, said that the sales performance was attributable to the government's role in handling Covid-19 cases.
For 2022, AISI predicts an increase of 2-8 percent in motorcycle sales. However, there might be constraints from the increase in VAT of 11 percent, which would raise sales prices.
"5.1 million-5.4 million units. This will also provide a positive multiplier effect for related industries," Sigit told Bisnis.com on Wednesday, January 12.
Not only motorcycle sales in the domestic market, the Indonesian motorcycle industry also recorded a positive trend in terms of exports. During 2021, export sales were much higher than the previous year.
AISI explained the motorcycle industry showed a 215 percent increase in export performances with 803,931 units shipped. This figure is very close to that before Covid-19 struck Indonesia, which was 810,433 units.
