Indonesia - Malaysia Form 'One Door System' for Migrant Workers Placement

8 December 2021 12:22 WIB

Manpower Minister Ida Fauziyah

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Manpower Minister Ida Fauziyah said the Indonesian and Malaysian government have agreed to finalize the draft MoU on the placement of Indonesian migrant workers (PMI) in the domestic sector under a “one channel system” before reopening workers in Malaysia.

This one channel system was once ordered by President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo and Malaysian Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob.

"This One Channel System mechanism will integrate the entire placement process, from recruitment, preparation, departure, placement to return. Both between ministries/agencies in Indonesia, as well as with ministries/agencies in Malaysia," said Ida as stated on the Ministry of Manpower website on December 7.

This system is intended to ease the monitoring by both countries and reduce costs on recruitment and Indonesian migrant workers’ placement to Malaysia. The system is expected to significantly slash the number of migrant workers entering Malaysia through unofficial procedures.

Ida said the negotiation process for the MoU on the Employment and Protection of Indonesian Domestic Workers in Malaysia is the commitment to the protection of both countries and the welfare of migrant workers in the domestic sector.

Malaysian Minister of Human Resources Datuk Seri M. Saravanan said Malaysia would continue to work closely with Indonesia to ensure that the recruitment and protection aspects of PMIs are always guaranteed and their welfare in Malaysia is protected.
