TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - University of Indonesia epidemiologist Pandu Riono in his Twitter account commended the government’s decision to drop the plan to curb public mobility through the introduction of the Level 3 public activity restriction (PPKM Level 3), which was intended to be imposed during Christmas and New Year’s holidays.
He also addressed the government’s decision to focus on tightening travel requirements during the two year-end national holidays, such as strictly adopting PeduliLindungi requirements in means of travel.
Pandu Riono admits that he personally believes Indonesia will be able to enter an endemic phase and set free from a third Covid-19 wave of cases, Bisnis.com reported.
“Even though the Indonesian Health Ministry stated a rise in cases across 21 regencies and cities, the cases are actually from active testing. Generally, Indonesia is still under control and shows no signs of a third wave,” Pandu wrote in his Tweet.
He explained that the high transmission and death rates in the past few months, especially in July, presented antibody effects on people who had not been vaccinated. "Those who survived will build antibodies even though they have not been vaccinated," said the epidemiologist.
Previously, Coordinating Minister of Investments and Maritime Affairs Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan announced the government will not impose the PPKM Level 3 evenly across Indonesian regions, which is a contrast to rumors before this signalling that the higher PPKM level will be imposed to curb Covid-19 spread.
