TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Born in Kwitang, Ismail Marzuki had composed around 240 songs from 1931 to 1958 and his first song was "O Sarinah" that depicted suffering of people.

In 1957, he composed "Inikah Bahagia" as his last song and he passed away a year after that song was released.

Among his works, several of his famous songs are about patriotism such as "Halo, Halo Bandung", "Gugur Bunga" and "Rayuan Pulau Kelapa" although he did have a known love song such as "Juwita Malam", and "Sabda Alam".

On this year's National Heroes Commemoration Day, Google Doodle has created and shown his doodle as a National Heroes.

He studied in Hollandsch Inlandsche School, an elementary school in Menteng and continued his study in MULO junior highschool. He was fluent in both Indonesian and Dutch and studied religion in a madrasa (an educational institution offering instruction in Islamic subjects).
