TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - State-owned airport operator Angkasa Pura II (AP II) on Tuesday announced that it is testing face recognition devices at the Soekarno-Hatta Airport’s Terminal 3 security checkpoint 2 for domestic departures. This trial period will prepare for a dedicated system installation in 2022.
“The first phase of the face recognition system is available at the Terminal 3 security checkpoint 2 of Soekarno-Hatta’s domestic departure,” said AP II president director Muhammad Awaluddin in a statement on November 9.
The security checkpoint 2 is located before the terminal’s boarding lounge. Air travelers will no longer have to show physical documentation for inspections in this area. This comes as part of Angkasa Pura’s gradual digital transformation that was first commenced in 2016.
The technology used in facial recognition is currently being verified by the Transportation Ministry’s air travel security directorate to scrutinize the technology’s aviation security aspects.
Angkasa Pura II Chief Project Business Digital Airport Wahyu Cahyadi said on Tuesday that the technology is supported by the in-house app touted as the ‘Travelin app’ that is available for downloads for Android and iOS devices. Travelers will be verified by the app and obtain a travelinPass that is cross-validated by the Indonesian Covid-19 tracing app PeduliLindungi.
