Movie Theaters in Jakarta to Reopen Starting September 16

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian Cinema Owners Association (GPBSI) Head Djonny Syafruddin announced that all movie theaters in Jakarta will reopen starting Thursday, September 16. The decision was taken in a meeting between GPBSI and the city’s Tourism and Creative Economy Agency today.
“We have agreed to open cinemas beginning this Thursday,” Djonny told reporters on Tuesday, September 14.
Jakarta’s Tourism and Creative Economy Agency initially allowed cinemas to reopen on a trial basis. Djonny said the city administration misunderstood the central government’s decision that permitted the operation of cinemas.
He explained his side considered the trial run as just a term adopted by the city government which meant that cinemas are allowed to welcome visitors starting the day after tomorrow.
The decision on the reopening of cinemas was noted in the Instruction of the Home Affairs Minister No. 42 of 2021. It was stated that cinemas in regions enforcing level 3 and 2 public mobility restrictions or PPKM Level 3 and 2 are allowed to operate.
On Monday, September 13, the central government announced that PPKM Level 3 is still in place in Jakarta until September 20, 2021.
