KPI Launches Internal Investigation into Alleged Sexual Violence

1 September 2021 21:16 WIB

TEMPO.CO, JakartaThe Indonesian Broadcasting Commission (KPI) was set to conduct an internal investigation into allegations of sexual violence in its institution.

“[We will] conduct an internal investigation by asking for explanations from both parties (suspected perpetrators and victims),” said KPI Commissioner, Yuliandre Darwis, in a written statement today, September 1.

A chain message circulated via WhatsApp messaging app about the alleged sexual harassment that occurred at the Central KPI. In the message, the victim who claimed to be MS had even filed reports to the National Human Rights Commission (Komnas HAM) in 2017 regarding the assaults.

Based on the message, the victim admitted that he had been bullied since 2011, or since signing to work with KPI, by some of his seniors. MS had even revealed one name of the perpetrators. He said the incident peaked in 2015 when he was sexually assaulted, making him traumatized.

Yuliandre asserted the KPI would not tolerate any form of sexual harassment and bullying against anyone and in any form. He also said his side supported the police to follow up on the case.

“KPI also protects, provides legal assistance, and psychological recovery for victims,” Yuliandre said, adding that the institution ensured to punish the perpetrators if they are proven to have committed acts of sexual violence and bullying.
