Megawati: The Law Is Clear, Presidential Terms in Office Limited to Two

25 March 2021 08:59 WIB

Chairperson of the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDIP) Megawati Soekarnoputri (center) walking while attending the closing of the PDIP I National Working Meeting (Rakernas) I in Jakarta, Sunday, January 12, 2020. PDIP hopes for victory in Solo and Medan in the 2020 Pilkada.

TEMPO.CO, JakartaChairperson of the ruling Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDIP), Megawati Soekarnoputri, stated that the country has a clear law on the presidential term in office.

“The rules of the game are in place. Is the president able to directly amend the regulation according to the constitution? He is not,” said Mega at the online launching event of the book entitled 'Merawat Pertiwi, Jalan Megawati Soekarnoputri Melestarikan Alam on Wednesday, March 24, 2021.

The issue of a third presidential term has resurfaced after former People's Consultative Assembly (MPR) speaker Amien Rais said that the government of Joko Widodo or Jokowi made an attempt to request a special meeting of the MPR. He suspected that the regime wanted to amend the 1945 Constitution so that the presidential term could be extended.

Mega refuted the issue, adding that the person who brought it up actually wanted to be in power for up to three terms in the future.

“These days, Pak Jokowi is rumored to have wished, as they said, for three terms in office. But it is the wish of the person who talks [of that]. Who knows that one day that person may want to rule in three terms,” said Megawati.
