Flash Floods Remain Threat in Gunung Mas Puncak Bogor: BIG

25 January 2021 13:10 WIB

TEMPO.CO, JakartaThe Geospatial Information Agency (BIG) reported that Gunung Mas Village, Cisarua District, Bogor, West Java, has not been freed from the threat of flash floods. Thus, disaster mitigation efforts in the area must be strengthened.

“The village is naturally located in the water outlet area from the upstream so based on the ecosystem side, this region potentially hit by floods again later,” said the BIG’s coordinator for thematic geospatial information, Ferrari Pinem, in a press release received here on Monday, Jan. 25.

On January 19, the village was submerged by floods following heavy rainfall of 50-100 millimeters per day.

The agency’s Team of Thematic Mapping and Integration Center conducted a quick assessment of the disaster in the region. The village is detected to be in the Cisampay sub-watershed (DAS), which is part of the upstream of the Ciliwung watershed.

The hill area at the top of the village is also a rain catchment area that has a shape like a bowl basin. The rain that is caught in the basin flowed through the water output passing through Gunung Mas village.

Therefore, based on the results of the rapid assessment, BIG recommended strengthening mitigation and an early warning system for flash floods and landslides in the area.
