TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Communication and Informatics (Kominfo) Minister Johnny Gerald Plate held a meeting with representatives of tech giants WhatsApp and Facebook for the Asia-Pacific region. Johnny asked the popular instant messaging platform and its parent company to explain their new policies on privacy.
“On Monday, January 11, 2021, as a follow-up to the meeting, the Ministry emphasized that WhatsApp/Facebook and related parties should do a number of things,” said Johnny in his statement on January 11.
Johnny asked the companies to raise their compliance with Indonesia’s legal provisions and regulations on personal data protection and ensure the fulfillment of the rights of personal data owners.
WhatsApp previously sent notifications to its users asking for approval regarding new terms and policies which sparked controversy as the public was concerned about safe personal data.
Johnny further called on the public to be more careful in using various online services. He also invited related parties to support the completion of the Personal Data Protection Bill.
