China Dominates Smartphone Market in Indonesia

7 September 2020 11:41 WIB

TEMPO.CO, JakartaThe competition in the Chinese smartphone market is fierce as many brands are targeting markets outside of the China mainland. The latest report of Counterpoint Research shows that Indonesia is among one of the growing smartphone markets in the world.

Chinese brands, according to the report, have a large share of the Indonesian cell phone market at 73 percent. In the second quarter of 2020, Vivo led the market with 21.2 percent of market share.

Below Vivo was Oppo with 20.6 percent of market share, followed by Samsung 19.6 percent, Xiaomi 17.9 percent, and Realme 13.6 percent. This data reveals the popularity of Chinese brands in Indonesia.

In the second quarter of last year, Samsung dominated the market. But due to some reasons, its market share dropped, giving a chance for Vivo and Realme to make substantial growth.

In addition, Counterpoint Deputy Director commented that Xiaomi dominated the online platform with 40 percent of market share. Meanwhile, the best-selling model sold online is Redmi 8A, followed by Realmi 5i series, and Redmi Note 8.

“Realme and Samsung place the second and third position in online marketplace sales,” said the deputy director as quoted from gizchina.com.

However, neither the online news portal nor Counterpoint Research specifically mentioned the total number of smartphones sold during that period.
