TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The chief of Commission D of the Jakarta Legislative Council (DPRD), Ida Mahmudah, suggested Jakarta Governor Anies Baswedan relocate the Formula E racing budget to handle flooding in the capital.
"Indeed, the people of Jakarta still need concentration from the governor regarding flood resolution. This is a priority in my opinion and indeed must be addressed immediately, no other way around it," Ida Mahmudah said in Jakarta, on Monday, February 10, 2020.
According to Ida, the allocation of funds for the Formula E race has only been a waste of the Jakarta Provincial budget. "If I, as a member of the board, is asked, it is better not to have Formula E. It’s a waste of money and the effects are not there," said Ida, the chief of development in the Jakarta DPRD.
According to Ida, no studies have indicated that an environmentally-friendly car race can boost the capital’s economy and tourism. "In terms of [the capital’s] economy, the increase is also very small, not on a par with the expenditure spent from the regional budget," said Ida.
Thus, Ida hoped that Jakarta Governor Anies Baswedan would reconsider organizing the Formula E race. The electric car race previously sparked a polemic in regard to the permit from the Medan Merdeka Regional Development Steering Commission.
