TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Batam Customs Office in Riau Islands Province has tackled an attempt to smuggle 30,037 ecstasy pills from Malaysia concealed in food packages and arrested a 28-year-old Indonesian as suspect.

Head of the Batam Customs Office Susila Brata stated here on Tuesday that the arrest was made at the international arrival terminal of Harbour Bay Batam Port.

"The authority seized 30,037 ecstasy pills and 31.7 grams of ecstasy hidden by the suspect J in 11 food packages," Brata remarked.

He elaborated that officers at the port were suspicious of the suspect's luggage when it passed the x-ray checking at the arrival terminal.

"The suspect was then brought to the customs office at the Harbour Bay Batam international port for further checking," Brata revealed.

Based on the inspection, he stated that the authority had discovered 11 food packages containing ecstasy.

The suspect, along with the evidence, were handed over to the Riau islands Police for further legal proceedings.

He was charged with article 113 of Law No. 35 of 2009 on narcotics and article 102(e) of Law No. 10 of 1995 on customs as amended by Law No. 17 on 2006.
