TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Constitutional law expert Mahfud MD said that this is the time for President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo to invite the leaders of Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) for discussions about the KPK Law revisions. So far, they are only waiting for the President’s stance.
“I think it would be wise for the President to invite them [for discussions],” said the former Constitutional Court chief justice in d’Tambir Cafe, Yogyakarta, Sunday, September 15.
Regarding the fate of KPK leaders today, Mahfud added, the position will not be empty if they handed over the mandate because the appointment of KPK commissioners is not the presidential authority.
Mahfud reiterated that the public expects a stronger anti-graft body, and the President also asserted that he would reinforce the KPK. Even those rejecting the law revisions favor the idea. “This is a democracy country. Just have a meeting and hold an open discussion.”
He further reminded that referred to Article 5 and 96 of Law No. 12/2011 on the guidance of drafting laws and regulations, each regulation must be canvassed based on the principle of openness through hearing meeting and study visits to universities.
“So there should be certain meetings, [the DPR and the government should] not suddenly [amend the law],” said Mahfud, who is also the former Defense Minister.
Anti-corruption activists lamented President Jokowi’s posture regarding the KPK Law revisions. The President actually has a powerful authority to prevent ‘the end’ of the KPK as a strong institution. However, he shared the same notion as the House of Representatives (DPR).
