TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Fire occurred at the Pasar Kambing area in Tanah Abang, Central Jakarta on Saturday evening, August 10, 2019. The incident killed two people.
Chief of Operational of the Central Jakarta Fire Department Syarifudin, said that the two people died when attempting to put out the fire. "So they were going to the bathroom to put out the fire, but then were trapped there," Syarifudin said at the site of the incident on Saturday, August 10, 2019.
The location of the bathroom where the victims were trying to get water was at the corner of the building. When the fire spreads, Syarifudin said, they were unable to get out.
The firefighters successfully extinguished the fire at around 11.15 PM. The victims' bodies were evacuated in red body bags. The victims were yet to be identified.
Chief of Tanah Abang Metro Police Adj. Sr. Comr. Lukman Cahyono, said that the fire was suspected to be originated from an explosion of a shredding machine from a coconut store. During that time, the employees of the store were refueling the machine.
"So probably the fuel hit a spark when the machine was being refueled,"Lukman said.
Lukman added that the fire from the explosion immediately spread to the roof of the store, which was made of wood. The location of the market, which is close to a residential area, caused the fire to spread rapidly. Four houses near the Pasar Kambing area were also burned.
