Traveloka Talks of Issue on Indonesia Unicorn Belong to Singapore

30 July 2019 19:53 WIB

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The management of online travel agent Traveloka responded to the issue about four Indonesian unicorns that were claimed to belong to Singapore. The issue was first revealed by the Capital Investment Coordinating Board (BKPM) head Thomas Lembong.

Lembong said the investment in the form of fundraising received by four Indonesian startups that have a valuation of over US$1 billion or unicorn was not recorded as an investment to the country but to Singapore.

The firm’s PR Director Sufintri Rahayu rebuffed Lembong’s statement. She asserted that her firm’s fundraising was absorbed in Indonesia as a part of the investment.

“The investment from our fundraising is distributed to develop Traveloka as an Indonesia-based startup,” said Sufintri in a phone call, Tuesday, July 30.

Sufintri explained the investment entered the archipelago since the parent company of the startup was located in Indonesia. “The main office is in Jakarta, and 80 percent of the employee works in Indonesia,” she added.

Earlier, Lembong claimed he was shocked when found out Google’s and Temasek’s study on digital economic growth in Indonesia in which noting four country’s digital firms, Gojek, Traveloka, Bukalapak, and Tokopedia, were unicorns belonged to Singapore.
