Environment Minister Views Jakarta's Air Quality Relatively Good

11 July 2019 17:32 WIB

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Environment and Forestry (KLHK) Minister Siti Nurbaya said that Jakarta’s air quality is still considered at a safe and healthy level.

“After monitoring Jakarta’s air quality, [It is deemed that] the air quality of the Capital is relatively good and healthy,” said Siti Nurbaya today, July 11, during the opening of the 2019 Forestry and Environment Week held at JCC, Senayan.

According to Siti Nurbaya, the standard of a “relatively good air quality” is obtained by comparing the national ambient air quality standards of 65 ug/Nm3.

Meanwhile, compared to the 25 ug/Nm3 from the World Health Organization (WHO), Jakarta’s air quality could be classified into the average level.

The Minister said that using the collective data from the ministry and city Administration's Air Quality Monitoring System, the city’s air is concentrated at 39 ug/Nm3 or unhealthy for sensitive groups such as babies and elderly people.

The air quality has stayed relatively constant, she says, after comparing the 2015-2016 data on the city’s air quality.

Using the measurement from AirVisual in 2017, managed by NGOs based in Beijing-China, Jakarta’s air quality according to the annual PM2.5 measurement ranks the city within the average level at 160th.
