BMKG Issues Warning of Extreme Weather on August 6 to 8

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics (BMKG) forecasted that that some regions in Indonesia are likely to experience extreme weather such as heavy rain and strong winds from August 6 to 8, 2016.

Information from BMKG’s official website on Saturday shows that areas with potentially heavy rains include Aceh, East Kalimantan, Maluku, West Papua and Papua.

Meanwhile, areas that are potentially hit by heavy rain and lightning/ thunder and strong winds are West Java, Central Java, East Java, West Nusa Tenggara and Central Sulawesi.

These extreme weather phenomena caused by air mass convergence in the South China Sea to the Pacific Ocean, North of Papua and the wind turns in the Makassar Strait to Seram Sea, as well as high air humidity in most areas in Indonesia.

These conditions favor the growing process of  rain clouds in those areas.

BMKG also issued an early warning of extreme weather expected to occur on Sunday (7/8) in a number of regions in Indonesia.

Residents in Aceh Region The north, west and south are also warned to be aware of strong winds expected to occur on Sunday (7/8).

The residents are also advised to be wary of strong winds of up to 40 kilometers per hour and wave heights of more than two meters that could potentially occur in the North Pacific Ocean in northern Halmahera.

Furthermore, BMKG also issued a warning regarding the increase of sea wave height the waters of off West Nusa Tenggara of up to three meters, as well as of the ocean waves with a height of 1.25 to 2.5 meters in the southern part of the Makassar Strait, Sabalana Islands waters and waters Selayar Islands.
