TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - House deputy speaker Fahri Hamzah viewed that the House of Representatives had worked effectively in carrying out its supervisory tasks. One of the indicators, Fahri added, was special inquiry committee’s performance in gathering facts to expose the Pelindo II case.
“The performance shown by the House’s special inquiry committee for the Pelindo II case indicates that corruption and executive power abuse wrapped with a policy can be exposed,” Fahri said in a press release received byTempo on Saturday, January 2, 2016.
According to Fahri, the House has planned to form a special inquiry committee to gather facts related to Freeport. The committee, Fahri added, would be a House’s effort to prove power abuse committed by the government.
“Will public support [the move]? It’s a challenge that must be addressed by the House so that public can consider the House as their partner in supervising the government,” he added.
Fahri added that public must be continuously convinced that building a balancing power outside the government was one of the ways to improve the democracy.
“If all political powers joined the government, a dangerous oligarchy will be created,” Fahri warned.
Therefore, the Red-and-White Coalition’s (KMP) initiative to build a balancing power outside the government must be fully supported by public. In addition, Fahri revealed that KMP’s plan to build a modern parliament must be supported in order to guarantee people’s sovereignty, supervise the government, and create an effective government.
“If the parliament is weak, a growing power among the executives would result in corruption and massive power misuses,” he added.
