TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Ministry of Manpower has issued a regulation on the protection of domestic maids.
Under the regulation, everyone who hires a maid must have a working contract.
"This is a concrete form of the government’s presence in protecting house maids,” said Manpower Minister Hanif Dhakiri on Saturday, January 18, 2015.
Hanif also said that the regulation applies for domestic maids who are either channeled through manpower bureaus or those who are personally requested by users.
"They (the house maids) are obliged to obtain either oral contract or a written contract,” he said.
The minister added that the contract must at least specific the identities of the two parties, rights and obligations of both parties and the period of the working contract.
"As for wages, it depends on the agreement of both parties,” Hanif said.
The minister further said that manpower bureaus that violate the regulation may have their business permit revoked, while for users who violate the regulation will be imposed with a sanction.
