TEMPO.CO, Maiduguri - Boko Haram fighters have reportedly killed 32 people and abducted dozens others in an attack at Gumsuri village in northeastern Nigeria last Sunday, December 14, 2014.
A Nigerian official, who speaks under the condition of anonymity, said that locals in the village of Gumsuri were still counting those abducted during Sunday’s attack in a remote isolated area in the Borno state. More than 100 people including women and children were abducted.
"After killing our youths, the fighters have taken away our wives and daughters," Mukhtar Buba said on Thursday, December 18, 2014, after escaping Gumsuri to Maiduguri, the capital of Borno state.
One of the local Nigerian officials said that Gumsuri had previously been protected against Boko Haram violence by a strong vigilante force, which was defeated by Boko Haram in the attack.
"For the past one year, [Boko Haram] fighters have made several attempts to attack Gumsuri but were resisted by the gallant youths of the village. It is sad that on Sunday, the village was subdued," the official said as quoted by AFP news agency.
