TEMPO.CO, Amsterdam - Dutch fighter jets intercepted a pair of Russian bombers that entered their airspace at 3.50 p.m. local time on Wednesday, April 23, 2014.
This action fairly comes amid escalating tensions between Russia and NATO over Russia's annexation of Ukraine and continued efforts to create unrest in eastern Ukraine.
Dutch military spokesman Maj. Wilko Ter Horst told CNN that two Russian TU-95 bombers, known as Bears, were flying 80km inside Dutch airspace.
A pair of Dutch F-16 jets were then deployed to escort the Russian planes and "ensure they [flew] out of our airspace," said Ter Horst.
Such events happen four and five times a year, he said.
