TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) explained the causes of the extreme cold condition that recently hit Java and Nusa Tenggara.
BMKG Deputy Mulyono Rahadi Prabowo explained that the different earth’s surfaces causing differences in temperature, the lowland such as beach tend to be warm, and the plateau such as mountain relatively has the cold temperature.
“The temperature can be ascertained to be lower. It can be less than 0 degrees Celsius. This is why dew can be frozen in the morning,” Prabowo explained, Wednesday, August 8.
The plateau area is mostly used for planting various kinds of plants such as vegetables and fruits which contain a lot of water.
“When the water content in the plant freezes, the plant will die or rot during the day. This is detrimental, in the economic terms,” Prabowo added.
According to BMKG, this natural phenomenon is expected to be finished in the middle of September 2018. That coincides with the shift of the sun towards the south and over the equator.
