TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia is once again in the world spotlight, this time not because of its proud achievements, but because of the title of country with the most online gambling players. Based on a survey from DroneEmprit, this country leads as the country with the largest number of online gambling players in the world, with the number reaching 201,122 people.
According to a report from DroneEmprit, here are the five countries with the largest number of online gambling players:
1. Indonesia: 201,122 players
2. Cambodia: 26,279 players
3. Philippines: 4,207 players
4. Myanmar: 650 players
5. Russia: 448 players
This figure is only from survey results, it does not represent the actual number. However, it is not only the number of players that is in the spotlight, but also the resulting economic impact.
According to a report from the Financial Transaction Reports and Analysis Center (PPATK), online gambling transactions in Indonesia have reached shocking numbers. During 2023 alone, there had been 168 million online gambling transactions recorded in the country, with a total turnover of IDR 327 trillion.
Reporting from KoranTempo, Tuesday edition, April 23, 2024, this figure covers 63 percent of the total turnover of transaction funds since 2017, which reached IDR 517 trillion. This phenomenon shows that online gambling has become a very profitable business in Indonesia.
Not only from an economic perspective, the social impact of this phenomenon is also very significant. PPATK has succeeded in identifying around 2.3 million online gambling players, of which 80 percent are low-income people.
These people usually make deposits worth around IDR 100,000, indicating that online gambling has spread to various levels of society, especially those who are financially less fortunate.
The Indonesian government has also taken steps to tackle this problem. The Ministry of Communication and Information (Kemenkominfo) has closed hundreds of thousands of online gambling sites, applications and Internet protocols related to this action. In fact, by January 2024, more than 1.4 million websites and online gambling content have been closed by the government.
