TEMPO.CO, JakartaStarting February 14, the Provincial Government of Bali will impose a US$10 levy on foreign tourists visiting the island. Payments can be made through the Love Bali app, among others.

Minister of Tourism and Creative Economy, Sandiaga Uno, said the tax applies to foreign tourists. The goal of taxing is to achieve better quality and sustainable tourism. The tax will be used to handle Bali's waste problem, preserve Balinese culture, and purify Balinese customs.

However, this tax revenue does not apply to foreign nationals who are holders of KITAS/KITAP. Starting on Valentine's Day this year, tax payments for foreign tourists can be made through the Love Bali application.

Initially Made as a Covid-mitigation App

The Love Bali system was created when the Covid-19 pandemic hit Indonesia. According to baliprov.go.id, the system was originally created by the Bali Government for tourists visiting the island during the pandemic. Post-COVID, the functions of the Love Bali app were diverted to tourism activities.

The Love Bali app works on Android and iOS devices. The app's features include QR scanning to check the information on numerous tourist sites, travel history, and media to convey criticism and suggestions. The app also provides notifications and updates on the latest situations related to tourism activities in Bali.

Starting on February 14, the app will also be used to pay foreign tourist tax payments. The trial phase for these payments ends at the end of January 2024. According to the Bali Tourism Office, in the trial phase, there were no problems in the payment process.

Tourists can make payments via the app prior to their arrival in Bali. They also have the option to pay once arriving at the airport or at the hotel they are staying.
