TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Hiking is not an activity to do on a whim without planning. There are several written and unwritten rules of hiking to ensure the safety of both the hikers and nature.
Don'ts of hiking
1. Violating the courtesy principle
We must not forget to be courteous wherever we may be, including in the mountains. Never speak carelessly and behave rudely during your hike.
2. Diverging from hiking routes
Almost every mountain has its route familiar to hikers to facilitate their activities and avoid the danger of being lost in the terrain. No matter how experienced you think you are, never diverge from a paved route.
3. Damaging the environment
Don't pick up flowers or damage any plant in the mountain. Hike with the famous saying "never leave anything but a trace, never take anything but a picture" constantly in your mind.
4. Littering
While hiking, you will see untouched nature devoid of inorganic wastes. Never litter during your hike, bring a waste bag to throw the trash away once you're out of the mountain area.
5. Killing animals
The chance of seeing wild animals during your hike is never zero. Don't bother the animals, moreover killing them.
Dos of hiking
1. Greeting other hikers
Even though it seems simple and trivial, greeting other hikers on your way up or down will help you train your sense of humility and make new friends.
2. Collect your own waste
Contribute to the ecosystem by doing things as simple as collecting your garbage in a waste bag and not littering. Collecting the garbage surrounding your tent will also urge other hikers to do the same.
3. Helping others
Helping other people who experience difficulties while hiking is the next good thing to do to foster solidarity between hikers. Don't forget to be mindful of your own capabilities and boundaries.
4. Photo-hunting
Photo-hunting is a mandatory activity during a hike. However, don't let your hunger for good content damage the mountain environment.
5. Make a ditch and clothesline
This may seem trivial, but a ditch and clothesline surrounding your tent will be beneficial to you during hiking. A ditch will help redirect water in case of unfortunate rainy days, and a clothesline is helpful to make your bags lighter with dry clothes.
