TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Finance Minister Sri Mulyani Indrawati stated that Indonesia is getting warmer, not because of political dynamics ahead of the presidential election, but because of climate change.
“Since 2023, the global average temperature has increased by 0.6 degrees Celsius compared to 1991 and 2020,” she said during the Indonesia Infrastructure Finance's Anniversary Dialogue in South Jakarta on Monday.
According to her, Indonesia was also one of the hottest countries in the world in 2022 with temperatures reaching 27.2 degrees Celsius. “This is not because of the political situation, but it is indeed hot.”
Citing the World Economic Forum's (WEF) Global Risk 2024 report, Sri said that climate change is one of the biggest challenges in the short and long term. As one of the affected countries, Indonesia has to deal with increased greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.
“In the long term, 10 years from now, this (climate change) will become the dominant risk faced by all countries and the entire world population,” Sri stressed.
The state treasurer also said that as Indonesia's economy grows and per capita income rises, it emits more CO2 – about three tons of CO2 per capita. However, Indonesia managed to produce lower emissions than several G20 countries, making it one of the lowest among G20 nations, such as the United Kingdom, the United States, and China.
“We want to reach the top but the reality is that Indonesia will continue to develop and there will be consequences,” she said.
Therefore, Sri called on infrastructure financing companies, such as Indonesia Infrastructure Finance (IFF), to build infrastructure that is sustainable in environmental, social, and financial terms.
“We need to solve the problem of climate change for the welfare of society, and IFF must be part of the solution,” Sri Mulyani said, emphasizing the importance of sustainable development.
