TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia Pavilion discussed the issue of glass house gas or GHG emissions reduction during the COP28 climate summit in Dubai, UAE.
"The [forestry, energy, and waste] sectors contributed to GHG emissions reduction in Indonesia by 42.1 percent in 2023 compared to business as usual," Minister of Environment and Forestry Siti Nurbaya Bakar said on Thursday, Nov. 30.
Foresty and other land use (FOLU) sectors remained the biggest contributor in reducing GHG emissions, reaching 60 percent.
Indonesia has also planned to reach the FOLU Net Sink 2030 target by increasing GHG absorption instead of emission. The minister is optimistic about reaching the target since deforestation in Indonesia has shown a downward trend over the past few years.
Concerning leadership in climate action, Indonesia proved its worth during the El Nino-induced drought this year for its success in containing peatland fires and preventing cross-boundary haze problems.
The Deputy Chairman of the People's Consultative Assembly or MPR Lestari Moerdijat invited all parties to support Indonesia's commitment to reduce GHG emissions. She asked both corporations and NGOs to join hands in realizing a healthy environment for all.
Agus Justianto, the person in charge of the Indonesia Pavilion explained that they would be at the COP28 Summit from Nov.30 to Dec. 11, 2023. Indonesia Pavilion is a soft diplomacy platform to voice Indonesia's strategy, action, and innovation regarding climate action.
"Indonesia Pavilion is intended to promote best practices implemented collaboratively by actors at local, national, and international levels," he concluded.
