6 Conditions That Will Trigger Sore Throat

30 October 2023 13:07 WIB

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - A sore throat or pharyngitis causes an itchy feeling in your throat and you will have difficulty in swallowing, as quoted from Healthline. According to the American Osteopathic Association, pharyngitis is caused by, among others, a virus or bacterial infection.

Below are six conditions that will cause a sore throat:

1. Virus infection

Virus infection could cause flu, influenza, and cough, which is marked by a sore throat. Meanwhile, bacterial infection through Streptococcus pyogenes is one of the triggers of sore throat.

2. Allergy

A sore throat could also be caused by allergies to fungi, dust, pollen, animal feathers or fur, and others.

3. Dryness

The dry air in a room could cause a sore throat, making it feel rough and itchy. Meanwhile, breathing through the mouth could also cause the throat to feel dry and painful.

4. Irritation

Air pollution from cigarettes or chemicals could cause a sore throat. Additionally, smoking, drinking alcohol, and consuming spicy food could also trigger a sore throat.

5. Tight muscles

The muscles in your throat can be too tense after excessive shouting or being silent for too long. A sore throat is usually marked by a hoarse voice and a dry feeling in the throat.

6. GERD

GERD, or gastroesophageal reflux disease, is a digestive system disease. GERD will cause stomach acid to rise to the esophagus. Some of the symptoms of GERD are nausea, sore throat, heartburn, and hoarse voice.
