TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Forest areas at the foot of Mount Lawu in the Tawamangu district of Karanganyar Regency, Central Java Province, were engulfed by fire on Wednesday, August 30, 2023. Tawamangu district head Eko Joko Widodo confirmed the incident last night.
He explained that the blaze was detected in Lot 42 of Tlogo Dringo Forest Management Resort (RPH) in Gondosuli Village.
“Yes, we received a report of a forest fire in the Gondosuli Village area on Wednesday afternoon,” Eko told Tempo on Wednesday evening.
The fire was discovered at around 15:00 WIB (Western Indonesian Time) as smoke was seen billowing from RPH Tlogo Dringo. The incident was then reported to the Tawangmangu Sector Police.
“Perhutani (state-owned forestry firm) and Forkompimcam Tawangmangu (District Leadership Communication Forum) immediately coordinated to check the fire spot. Efforts have been made to manually extinguish the fire to prevent it from spreading,” Eko explained.
Various elements from Perhutani, the Indonesian Military (TNI), the National Police (Polri), the Regional Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD), as well as volunteers from Karanganyar Regency were involved in the forest firefighting efforts.
Eko also said that the cause of the fire has not yet been confirmed and hoped that the forest fires in Mount Lawu areas would not spread. Fortunately, the source of the fire was far from residential areas.
