TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Padang Mayor Mahyeldi Ansyarullah affirms his commitment to clearing cigarette advertisements from Padang by 2018. His reason is to protect young generation from cigarette impact.
Mahyeldi stated that a number of cigarette brands in which their advertisement licenses have ended would not be extended. As a result, their advertisements have to be taken down.
“The decision to no longer accept cigarette advertisement is nothing new. It has been Padang Administration agenda since 2014. The consideration behind this decision is because cigarette advertisements confer more negative impact than positive impact,” Mahyeldi explained.
“Starting 31 December 2017, all cigarette banners or advertisements will no longer be at sight in Padang,” Mahyeldi added. This includes cigarette advertisements in food stalls or shops.
With this commitment, Padang Administration is ready to lose Regional Revenue (PAD) as much as Rp3 - 4 billion per year from cigarette advertisements. Despite so, Mahyeldi is not concerned because there are a lot of other sources of PAD including hospitals, hotels and restaurants.
