TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian Government firmly condemns the use of chemical weapons during an airstrike in Idlib, northwest Syria, which killed dozens of civilians.
“Indonesia condemns the use of chemical weapons in Syria that killed dozens of civilians including children,” said the Spokesman for the Indonesian Foreign Affairs Ministry, Arrmanatha Nasir, on Thursday, April 6, 2017.
As a nation that took part in ratifying the 1998 chemical weapon convention, Indonesia denounces the use of chemical weapons in general. Indonesia has urged UN to immediately conduct an open investigation towards the airstrike that was allegedly conducted by Syria’s air force. Other than that, Indonesia requested the UN to take to the court the people responsible for the attack.
UN General Secretary, Antonio Guterres, stated that he is deeply disturbed by the incident that took place on Tuesday, April 4, 2017. According to media reports, the attack has killed 70 people and injured 200.
“The UN, currently, isn’t in the position to independently corroborate the report,” says Guterres.
The Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) announced that they have established a fact-finding mission to collect information regarding the attack to confirm the use of chemical weapons.
