TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Islamic Society Forum (FUI) announced a plan to launch a rally, called the 313 rally, on March 31, 2017, to urge the government to remove Basuki Tjahaja Purnama also known as Ahok from his post as the Jakarta Governor. The FUI is planning to conduct the rally at the Istiqlal Mosque and in front of the State Palace in Jakarta.
"As a religious leader under the FUI, I will join the 313 rally," Novel Bamukmin, secretary general of the Jakarta branch of the Islamic Defender Front (FPI), told Tempo on Monday, March 27, 2017.
Novel predicted that the number of participants joining the rally would be the same as that in the previous one. The FUI previously launched a peaceful rally on February 21, 2017, in front of the House of Representatives building.
Last year, the FUI, along with the FPI and a number of religious organizations, launched several rallies. One of them ended up in a riot.
The FUI planned to launch another rally to gather a huge number of people. The mass will gather at the Istiqlal Mosque to conduct a Friday prayer and march to the State Palace.
In front of the Palace, the FUI will call on the government to remove Ahok from the Jakarta Governor seat. In addition, the FUI will also call on the government to imprison Ahok for being a suspect in a religious blasphemy case.
