TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Police Criminal Investigation Unit chief Comr. Gen. Ari Dono Sukmanto said he has received a report from community members on an anti-government protest. “We have started the investigation,” Ari said at the National Police Headquarters in South Jakarta, Wednesday, November 23, 2016.
Ari did not reveal the identity of the person who filed the report. He said that the report was related to Articles 204 and 2017 of the Criminal Code on insult to the government or legal entities.
The planned demonstration on November 25 is evidently aimed at overthrowing the government, according to Ari. “It’s as clear as day, everybody can see it, everybody can hear it. However, the process is the same. We will have to investigate into it first,” he said.
Earlier on Monday, Police chief General Tito Karnavian claimed that certain groups had planned to topple the government led by President Joko Widodo. He pointed to the meetings held by community leaders to mobilize people and hold an anti-government mass rally at the House of Representatives (DPR) building on November 25. “Therefore, we have anticipated it by stepping up security measures at the DPR building,” Tito noted.
According to Tito, the planned mass rallies on November 25 and December 2 would not be held solely to seek prosecution of inactive Jakarta Governor Basuki Tjahaja Purnama in a blasphemy case. There’s a hidden agenda by certain groups to overthrow Joko Widodo’s administration, he said. He added that protesters would break into and ‘take over’ the DPR building.
