Prabowo Coalition Grants MPR Speakership to Democrat, PPP

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The coalition of parties endorsing Prabowo Subianto has officially decided candidates for the speakers of the People’s Consultative Assembly (MPR). The names that will be proposed at the House of Representatives (DPR)'s plenary session tomorror were chosen in a meeting held at the residence of Aburizal Bakrie, the Functional Group (Golkar) party’s Chairman, last night.

"It has been agreed that four seats are available for parties under the coalition and one for regional representative council," Golkar Party’s secretary general Tantowi Yahya said after the meeting.

Member of Prosperous Justice Party (PKS) syuro council, Hidayat Nur Wahid, who attended the meeting, said two of the four MPR speaker seats would be filled by the Democrat Party and the United Development Party (PPP).

"The Democrat Party and the PPP are included in the speakership," he said, refusing to reveal the names of the candidates and which parties in the coalition that will have the remaining two seats.

Democrat Party’s deputy Chairman Max Sopacua who also attended the meeting confirmed that his party had won a seat of MPR speakership candidates.

"It’s our early political commitment between the coalition and us," Max said, saying that the name has yet to be decided.
