TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Gunung Kidul Regional Government eyes for investments in tourism area while awaiting geopark status confirmation from UNESCO. "We have begun to discuss the investment discourse, maintaining its geopark directives," said the Chief of Gunung Kidul Regional Development Planning Agency Syarif Armunanto.
Gunung Kidul on April 2014 will get its final assessment from UNESCO concerning the Geopark status. There are as many as 11 geosites in Mount Sewu to receive assessment, including Nglanggeran Prehistoric Volcano, Sambipitu Early Miosen Sea Deposit, Pindul Cave, Kali Suci Cave, Luweng Jomblang, Siung Wediombo Beach, Sadeng Prehistoric Valley, Bleberan Waterfall, Jlamprong Cave, and Luweng Cokro.
Syarif refused to explain the details of the investment concept. "We are still working on it. Surely, it has to be environmental friendly and empowering local society," he said. Geopark Status from UNESCO can serve as an important factor in managing Gunung Kidul's tourism potential.
