TEMPO.CO, Kuta - For the past four days, Kuta Beach in Bali has hosted over 15 tons of garbage resulting in one of the world’s top beach destinations to look more like the slums.
Chief of Badung district’s Hygiene and Park Management Agency, Eka Merthawan, said the sight of trash has become an annual routine as piles of garbage are carried to the beach through wind and water.
In order to deal with the mountains of trash, the agency has deployed a quick-response unit (URC) of 36 people to clean it up. However, given its enormous volume, the URC will not be able to clear up the garbage anytime soon.
Eka said the sea’s waves crash into the beach’s shores along with a huge amount of garbage and added that this condition will likely persist until March next year.
