TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Foreign Minister Retno LP Marsudi said the Palestinian issue is of a concern to Indonesia as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council for the period of 2019-2020.

"The issue of Palestine will be of a concern to Indonesia," said Minister Retno at the Foreign Ministry's Diplomacy Cafeteria, Jakarta, Friday night, June 8.

Minister Retno gave an explanation after the voting process of the UN Security Council's non-permanent members period of 2019-2020 was finalized with 144 votes out of 190 votes supporting Indonesia.

The number of votes to Indonesia is more than two-thirds of the UN members votes. The Maldives won 46 votes and none abstained.

Indonesia competed with the Maldives to represent the Asia Pacific region in the UN Security Council. Indonesia is a country that supports Palestinian independence since the very beginning.

Minister Retno also mentioned some of the issues that will be the focus during the UN Security Council's non-permanent membership. The issues are strengthening the global peace ecosystem, resolving conflict peacefully, and increasing the capacity of peacekeepers including the role of women.

Furthermore, building the synergy of inter-regional organizations with the UN Security Council in maintaining peace.

Indonesia will also fight terrorism, invite the members of UN Security Council to work more effectively, efficiently, and accountable.
