TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Jakarta Governor Anies Baswedan asserted that street vendors (PKL) are barred from operating throughout the Sudirman-Thamrin sidewalk following the revamp in the area.

“The sidewalk in Sudirman-Thamrin is not for street vendors to sell their goods, but it’s exclusively for pedestrians,” said Anies Baswedan after the introduction of the new revamped Sudirman-Thamrin sidewalk on Tuesday, March 6.

However, Anies said that the new design will include a space on the sidewalk to build several kiosks that will only be allowed to sell goods that are relevant to the area’s main theme.

“[The kiosks] will probably sell goods such as magazines, newspapers, Transjakarta access cards. The existence of the kiosks is to support the activities of people passing through the area,” said the Governor.

During the introduction of the new design, the Jakarta Administration also explained that the Sudirman-Thamrin street will have five lanes. One lane for Transjakarta, three lanes for four-wheeled vehicles, and another one for the motorcycle as well as public and tour buses.

Meanwhile, the sidewalk will be split into two; one area for public facilities and another for pedestrians. The kiosks will be placed in the area used for public facilities, other than bus stops, street benches, toilets, and other supporting facilities.

According to President Director of Arkonin, Sudirman-Thamrin designer company, Achmad Noerzaman, the kiosks will be placed near the bus stops throughout the Sudirman-Thamrin street.
