Earthquake Hits Bali, Felt Up to Mataram

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - A magnitude 5.5 SR earthquake hit Karangasem, Bali, on the early morning of Thursday, November 9. The quake was also felt by people 120 kilometers away in Mataram, West Nusa Tenggara.

According to the The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG), the quake shook Mataram on 04:54 AM Indonesian Western Time. The epicenter of the earthquake was located at 11 kilometers Northeast of Karangasem, Bali, at 8.26 degree south latitude and 115.7 degree East Longitude with its hypocenter at the depth of 10 kilometers. No tsunami is predicted to be triggered by the quake.

Several residents of Mataram rushed out of their houses after the earthquake shook the place on 05:54 AM.

The government is still studying whether the earthquake was caused by the activity of Mount Agung. “[The earthquake’s hypocenter] was shallow, which is why it can be strongly felt in Mataram,” said Agus Riyanto, Head of Mataram Geophysics Station.
