WALHI: Banning Seminar of 1965 Tragedy Threatens Democracy

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian Forum for the Environment (WALHI) raised their voice on the police’s banning seminar of 1965 History organized by Jakarta Legal Aid Institute (LBH) on Saturday (16/9). The police stated that the event did not have a permit. WALHI criticized the police’s act that is militaristic and anti-democracy.

"The police have shown their true colors," 29 WALHI directors stated in consensus on Sunday(17/9).

WALHI reminded the police that LBH Jakarta has played an important role in supporting reform movement in security sector. One of the supports was by pushing the police to be separated from National Military (TNI) under the spirit of citizen protection.

WALHI considered LBH as a house of democracy built by the people’s movement. "It is a place for farmers, fishermen, ethnic groups, labor, women, urban poor population, and other underrepresented people who are victims of injustice by the Law and development," WALHI stated. WALHI also recognizes the role of LBH in upholding human rights.
