TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Darmin Nasution said that the pattern of people`s consumption in Indonesia is changing.
He mentioned an example of the old pattern where the middle-to-upper class people used to consider buying new clothes as a symbol of pride. Now, this is not the case anymore.
People have shifted their expenses from purchasing goods to spending more on recreational activities and other types of lifestyle spending.
“Their consumption tends to be spent on recreational activities, while in the same time we have been focusing too much on the retail index,” said Darmin Nasution today, August 14.
The middle class, according to Darmin, are thinking more about their spiritual needs that include fun and uplifting leisure consumptions. Unfortunately, officials do not have sufficient data to analyze the change in direction for the government’s future policy.
This change in people’s consumption is backed by data provided by the Central Statistics Agency (BPS).
