TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Jakarta Governor Djarot Saiful Hidayat has instructed the Transportation Office and the Police Department to arrest motorcyclists who use the sidewalks. "That’s bang out of order. Transportation Office and the police should arrest [them]," Djarot said yesterday in Taman Mini Indonesia Indah, East Jakarta.

He expressed that sidewalks are made for pedestrians, not for motorcyclists. He said that harsh action will be taken against violators. "Arrest, prosecute [the violators], because they have violate the rights of pedestrians," Djarot said.

Moreover, Djarot reminds others to stop using the sidewalks. That include street vendors. Djarot stressed that authorities must clamp down on vendors who run their business on sidewalks.

On the other hand, Djarot has expressed his appreciation to a pedestrian community who have fought for their rights. He said that Jakartans will benefit from walking. He added that Jakartans are becoming less inclined to walk.

Earlier, a video has been making the rounds on social media that appear to show a motorcyclist who was furious with a protest staged by a pedestrian community who blocked his way on the sidewalk. The man said that traffic jam forced him to use the sidewalk.
