TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Istiqlal has banned former participants of anti Ahok rally from staging the so called Aksi Bela Ulama 96 (Defend Ulema Rally) on the mosque compound. "Because it would coincide with a routine agenda of the Istiqlal administrators," Istiqlal mosque administrator Abu Huraerah Abdul Salam Huraerah said today, June 9.
Jakarta Metro Police chief Insp. Gen. Mochammad Iriawan said earlier that he had yet to receive any notice about the Defend Ulema Rally. Therefore, Iriawan has called on the group to cancel it. "What’s the point of another protest? It’s not necessary," he said.
The Presidium Alumni 212 (former participants of anti-Ahok rally) chairman Ansufri Sambo, however, claimed that he had already sent the notice. Despite not being allowed by both the mosque administrator and police, they insist on staging a protest at the Istiqlal.
The Presidium Alumni 212 views that the government has violated human rights by criminalizing ulemas. It pointed to a pornography case in which the Islamic Defenders Front (FPI) leader Rizieq Syihab has been named a suspect. Therefore, it had planned to stage the Aksi Bela Ulama 96.
