TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Bandung Institute of Technology’s Policy and Regulatory Studies Center Secretary-General Muhammad Ridwan Effendi stated that Telkomsel’s internet tariffs and those of other operators are still low across the globe.
"Telkomsel’s internet tariff is still average. It’s even included as the cheapest category in the world after Intenrnet tariff India," Ridwan said in Jakarta on Friday (28/4).
Ridwan responded to the protest case of the hacker of www.telkomsel.com, who among others demanded the company to decrease their Internet rate.
Based on his research and direct experience while visiting a number of countries, Indonesia’s internet tariff is still the lowest.
He cite the example of the U.S. internet tariff with 8 Giga Byte quota costs US$40 or Rp520,000 assuming Indonesia’s exchange rate is Rp13,000 per dollar.
"In Indonesia, Internet package comes in a variety of prices, and there is even a package which costs Rp45,000. Similar to the tariff of phone calls, in Indonesia it costs around Rp1,700 per minute. While in The UK, it costs 15 cent or around Rp3,000 per minute," he explained.
Ridwan added that operators in Indonesia currently still cross-subsidize phone call services to Internet data packages.
