TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Nur Masripatin, director general for climate change control at the Environment and Forestry Ministry, said that the government would complete the ratification of the Paris Agreement in November prior to the 22nd Conference of Parties (COP) in Marrakech.
"[The Paris Agreement] is expected to be ratified before [the conference] in Marrakech," Nur Masripatin said after attending a seminar in Jakarta on Wednesday, August 31, 2016.
Nur Masripatin explained that President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo had issued an initiative approval for his directorate. Accorddng to Nur Masripatin, the Ministry is in communications with the House of Representatives and the Law and Human Rights Ministry to discuss the ratification.
The Paris Agreement was the result of the 21st Conference or Parties held in Paris to succeed the Kyoto Protocol. The agreement contains a commitment to limit the global temperature increase under 2 degrees Celsius.
Nur Marispatin added that United Nations secretary general Ban Ki Moon had sent a message to 55 heads of states who signed the Paris Agreement. He revealed that the implementation of the agreement would cost US$100 billion.
In order to achieve the implementation, Nur Marispatin suggested the government to conduct a transition to a sustainable low carbon green economy.
