TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Ministry of Industry is reviewing to give incentives for automotive industries that plan to develop electric cars in Indonesia.
I Gusti Putu Suryawirawan, the ministry's director general of metal, machinery, transportation equipment and electronics, said that electric cars are still an expensive item to produce, that's why its development require a special incentive.
Some of the technologies that are needed to produce electric cars include charging stations, batteries and electric motors.
Putu said that Indonesia has a shot to develop and market electric cars, given the country's large automotive market.
As of today, the number of electric cars in the world is about 4 million units. By 2020, the number is expected to 10 million units.
Technologies related to energy-efficient vehicles include advance eco-friendly diesel/petrol engines, alternative fuels (bio-fuels), gas fuel (CNG or LGV), electric vehicles, hybrids, dual fuel (gasoline-gas) engines and fuelcell (hydrogen).
According to Putu, relevant institutions need to synergize and cooperate to conduct researches and development. Indonesia also needs to have the necessary regulations related to the development of these technologies.
