TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Handoyo Sudrajat, the director general of penitentiaries at the Justice and Human Rights Ministry, said on Thursday, December 18, 2014, that his institution has proposed a budget for detectors procurement to the central government.
According to Handoyo, the budget will be used to procure metal, cellphone and drugs detectors to prevent illegal item smugglings to the penitentiary institutions.
“The detectors will be included in the penitentiaries directorate’s IT needs,” Handoyo said.
Handoyo explained that relying on officers’ accuracy and discipline would not be effective since there is only one warden for every 45 prisoners.
“We’re lacking of wardens, while there are hundreds if not thousands of inmates living in a correctional center,” Handoyo said.
During a raid at seven correctional centers in Cipinang, Salemba, Pondok Bambu, and Cinere, the Penitentiaries Director General found hundreds of illegal items, including cellphones, chargers, power bank, sharp weapons, internet modem, laptops, mini TVs, DVD player and stoves.
